Muscular dystrophy (MD)- Astrological pointers

X-linked recessive genetic defects

Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a group of muscle diseases that weaken the musculo skeletal system and hamper locomotion.[1][2] Muscular dystrophies are characterized by progressive skeletal muscle weakness, defects in muscleproteins, and the death of muscle cells and tissue.[3]
In the 1860s, descriptions of boys who grew progressively weaker, lost the ability to walk, and died at an early age became more prominent in medical journals. In the following decade, French neurologist Guillaume Duchenne gave a comprehensive account of thirteen boys with the most common and severe form of the disease, which now carries his name—Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The prognosis for people with muscular dystrophy varies according to the type and progression of the disorder. Some cases may be mild and progress very slowly over a normal lifespan, while others produce severe muscle weakness, functional disability, and loss of the ability to walk. Some children with muscular dystrophy die in infancy while others live into adulthood with only moderate disability. The muscles affected vary, but can be around the pelvis, shoulder, face or elsewhere. Muscular dystrophy can affect adults, but the more severe forms tend to occur in early childhood.

Becker's muscular dystrophy300376DMDBecker muscular dystrophy (BMD) is a less severe variant of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and is caused by the production of a truncated, but partially functional form of dystrophin.[4] Survival is usually into old age.[14] Affects only boys (with extremely rare exceptions)
Congenital muscular dystrophyMultipleMultipleAge at onset: birth; symptoms include general muscle weakness and possible joint deformities; disease progresses slowly; shortened life span.[15]
Congenital muscular dystrophy includes several disorders with a range of symptoms. Muscle degeneration may be mild or severe. Problems may be restricted to skeletal muscle, or muscle degeneration may be paired with effects on the brain and other organ systems. A number of the forms of the congenital muscular dystrophies are caused by defects in proteins that are thought to have some relationship to the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex and to the connections between muscle cells and their surrounding cellular structure. Some forms of congenital muscular dystrophy show severe brain malformations, such as lissencephaly and hydrocephalus.[4]
Duchenne muscular dystrophy310200DMDDuchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common childhood form of muscular dystrophy, it generally affects only boys (with extremely rare exceptions), becoming clinically evident when a child begins walking. By age 10, the child may need braces for walking and by age 12, most patients are confined to a wheelchair.[16] Patients usually die around age 25, but this depends from person to person.[16] In the early 1990s, researchers identified the gene for the protein dystrophinwhich, when absent, causes DMD. The amount of dystrophin correlates with the severity of the disease (i.e. the less dystrophin present, the more severe the phenotype). Since the gene is on the X chromosome, this disorder affects primarily males, and females who are carriers have milder symptoms. Sporadic mutations in this gene occur frequently, accounting for a third of cases. The remaining two-thirds of cases are inherited in a recessive pattern.
Dystrophin is part of a complex structure involving several other protein components. The "dystrophin-glycoprotein complex" helps anchor the structural skeleton (cytoskeleton) within the muscle cells, through the outer membrane (sarcolemma) of each cell, to the tissue framework (extracellular matrix) that surrounds each cell. Due to defects in this assembly, contraction of the muscle leads to disruption of the outer membrane of the muscle cells and eventual weakening and wasting of the muscle.[4]
Distal muscular dystrophy254130DYSFDistal muscular dystrophies' age at onset: 20 to 60 years; symptoms include weakness and wasting of muscles of the hands, forearms, and lower legs; progress is slow and not life-threatening.[14]
Miyoshi myopathy, one of the distal muscular dystrophies, causes initial weakness in the calf muscles, and is caused by defects in the same gene responsible for one form of LGMD (Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy).[4]
Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy310300,181350EMD,LMNAEmery-Dreifuss Muscular Dystrophy patients normally present in childhood and the early teenage years with contractures. Clinical signs include muscle weakness and wasting, starting in the distal limb muscles and progressing to involve the limb-girdle muscles. Most patients also suffer from cardiac conduction defects and arrhythmias which, if left untreated, increase the risk of stroke and sudden death.
There are three subtypes of Emery-Dreifuss Muscular Dystrophy, distinguishable by their pattern of inheritance: X-Linked, autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive. The X-linked form is the most common. Each type varies in prevalence and symptoms. The disease is caused by mutations in the LMNA gene, or more commonly, the EMD gene. Both genes encode for protein componenets of the nuclear envelope. However, how the pathogenesis of these mutations is not well understood.[17]
Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy158900DUX4Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) initially affects the muscles of the face, shoulders, and upper arms with progressive weakness. Symptoms usually develop in the teenage years. Some affected individuals become severely disabled. The pattern of inheritance is autosomal dominant, but there are a significant number of spontaneous mutations. Seminal research published in August 2010 documents that two defects are needed for FSHD, which for the first time provides a unifying theory for the underlying genetics of FSHD. The first is the deletion of D4Z4 repeats and the second is a "toxic gain of function" of the DUX4 gene.[4][18]
Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) occurs both in males and females.
Limb-girdle muscular dystrophyMultipleMultipleLimb-girdle muscular dystrophy is also called LGMD. Affects both boys and girls. LGMDs all show a similar distribution of muscle weakness, affecting both upper arms and legs. Many forms of LGMD have been identified, showing different patterns of inheritance (autosomal recessive vs. autosomal dominant). In an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance, an individual receives two copies of the defective gene, one from each parent. The recessive LGMDs are more frequent than the dominant forms, and usually have childhood or teenage onset. The dominant LGMDs usually show adult onset. Some of the recessive forms have been associated with defects in proteins that make up the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex.[4] Though a person normally leads a normal life with some assistance, in some extreme cases, death from LGMD occurs due to cardiopulmonary complications.[20]
Myotonic muscular dystrophy160900,602668DMPK,ZNF9Myotonic muscular dystrophy is an autosomal dominant condition that presents with myotonia (delayed relaxation of muscles) as well as muscle wasting and weakness.[21] Myotonic dystrophy varies in severity and manifestations and affects many body systems in addition to skeletal muscles, including the heart, endocrine organs, eyes, and gastrointestinal tract.
Myotonic muscular dystrophy type 1 (DM1), also known as Steinert disease, is the most common adult form of muscular dystrophy. It results from the expansion of a short (CTG) repeat in the DNA sequence of the DMPK (myotonic dystrophy protein kinase) gene. Myotonic muscular dystrophy type 2 (DM2) is much rarer and is a result of the expansion of the CCTG repeat in the ZNF9 (zinc finger protein 9) gene. While the exact mechanisms of action are not known, these molecular changes may interfere with the production of important muscle proteins.[4]
Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy164300PABPN1Oculopharyngeal MD's age at onset: 40 to 70 years; symptoms affect muscles of eyelids, face, and throat followed by pelvic and shoulder muscle weakness, has been attributed to a short repeat expansion in the genome which regulates the translation of some genes into functional proteins.[4]

vitiligo ( fulwari) and astrology of skin disorders.

body vitiligo picturevitiligo picture

Vitiligo (pron.: /ˌvɪtɨˈlɡ/) is a condition that causes de pigmentation of sections of skin. It occurs when melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigmentation, die or are unable to function. The cause of vitiligo is unknown, but research suggests that it may arise from autoimmune, genetic, oxidative stress, neural, or viral causes.[1] The incidence worldwide is less than 1%.[2] The most common form is non-segmental vitiligo, which tends to appear in symmetric patches, sometimes over large areas of the body.

Vitiligo & Leucoderma are two different terms used for the same skin disease. But some causative difference is there in between vitiligo & Leucoderma. Basically Leucoderma is a Latin word which literally means ‘white skin’. It is popularly known as white patch also. It generally happens due to absence of melanin pigmentation over the skin.

Wisely we call it a ‘disorder’ as no pain and symptoms can be found in Vitiligo & Leucoderma. So, it can’t be termed as a disease. It may start with a small spot which later enlarge into a large white patch. It may be pale in colour initially but gradually it turns white with time due to complete loss of melanin pigmentation over affected areas. The shape and size of a white patch cannot be judged.

Cause of Leucoderma could be accidental as a cut, burn or an ulcer. With due reasons the melanocytes cells which produce melanin pigment gets damaged. Due to this damage the pigmentation gradually disappears from the affected areas and the skin becomes white there resulting into a white patch.
However cause of Vitiligo could be improper hygiene, inappropriate food combinations, regular junk food intake, insecticide/pesticide treated green vegetable intake regularly, past history of Jaundice or Typhoid fever, harsh Antibiotic use etc. One important cause of Vitiligo could be sudden emotional trauma, stress. Due to one reason or all reasons toxin substance is formed inside human body which disturbs the human Immune system and the disturbed immunity system reaches to the condition of Autoimmunity (a condition in which immune system of body destroys its own cells & tissues). This Autoimmunity is the basic important reason of Vitiligo according to Ayurvedic as well as Allopathic system of medicine.

Mercury represents a subtle and sharp mind, intellect and well defined logic. A person influenced by Mercury will be interested in knowing the occult sciences also. And most importantly, it represents ths skin of the individual. The nature of the disease in a person may vary depending upon the nature of the planet afflicting Mercury. It is a well known astrological fact that Saturn is a slow moving planet and causes chronic diseases that are difficult to cure and carry on for a long period of time. Similarly  Mars is a fiery planet and is known for its violent behavior. Therefore the troubles caused by Mars come on suddenly and are very forceful in nature. Rahu is a slain demon without any body of its own and therefore the problems it causes are also similar in nature, which cause a lot of anxiety but have no substance. Moon is a watery planet and represents fluids in the body. It is also a fast moving planet and a changeable one as its shape and size changes everyday. Keeping the nature of these planets in mind is important in getting to understand the diseases that a person may be troubled with. In case Saturn afflicts the mercury of a person, he can be prone to chronic skin troubles which are difficult to cure and keep progressing slowly despite the best possible treatments. In case mars afflicts such a mercury, there are often violent and sudden aggravation and patients often see long periods of remission when they are not at all troubled by any disease. It is only occasionally that the disease surfaces and it happens quite suddenly and violently. In case Rahu affects Mercury, the disease is often difficult to diagnose and the patient is often at a loss to understand what afflicts him or her. Such people are also often prone to sudden outbreaks or episodes of diseases. The involvement of Moon in such cases leads to the formation of pus or in cases of eczema, there is often oozing of discharges. This is known as wet eczema. In cases where there is involvement of Ketu, one often sees infections and allergic reactions to different antigens.

  • Leucoderma Moon, Sun and a malefic posited in Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces gives the problem of leucoderma
  • Moon, Venus and a malefic planet placed in a movable sign causes leucoderma
  • Mars and Saturn posited in 2nd/12th house, Moon in ascendant, and Sun is placed in 7th house
  • Rahu, Sun, Mars/Saturn associated with Moon and Mercury/ ascendant
  • A malefic planet in Cancer/Scorpio/Pisces may cause white patches on the body
  • Ascendant posited in 8th house associated /aspected by malefic, chances of having white patches increases
  • Moon in ascendant hammed between two malefic planets posited in 2nd and 12th
  • Moon, Mars and Saturn together placed in Aries/Taurus

Skin disorders
In astrology, the planet mercury and the sixth house in the horoscope is responsible for skin related disorders.
The astrological cause:
If Planet Saturn, Rahu and Mars are placed unfavorably and Sun and Moon are also weak in the horoscope, skin infections appear.
When planet Ketu is placed unfavorably in the 7th house then pimples appear on the face. But this ill effect can be overshadowed when planet Mercury is strong in the horoscope. Contrary to this, if planet Mercury is weak, then the subject definitely faces this problem.

The malefic placement of the planet Moon causes whiteheads, blackheads and pustules.
Papules are caused by weak Moon in the horoscope.
Malefic Rahu causes painful pimples.
Counter evil planetary effects of sixth house.
Chant the Surya Mantras or recite Aditya Hradya Strota.
Feed dog with a chapati on Saturday.
Chant Saraswati Strot.
Worship Parad Shiv Linga.

Skin Disorders    Ascendant: general mental and physical health 2nd house: represent face, pimples on face, facial scars6th house: sickness Saturn: natural significator of skin, age related problems, eczema , incurable diseases Moon: blood impurity, anaemia Venus: beauty of skin Mercury: stress in life, skin problems Mars: boils, rashes, allergies, measles

Sixth lord saturn aspects the Mercury the chief significator of  skin diseases ,debilated and combust Mars aspects the moon with 4th aspect ,Mercury here is lord of lagna or physical body here ,in navamsa saturn is conjuct mercury and lagan rashi virgo is placed in 6th house ( the disease Karak house),The child was detected to have vitiligo in 2004 in the  Maha dasha of Jupiter ( the panet of expansion) here it is malefic and badhak as it owns two kendras and antar dasha of moon the dispositor of jupiter +Sun +Mars, moon is aspected by debilated mars.

The method has been detailed in Shri Bepin Behari's book "Astrology Simplified." The details under the heading "SPHUTA" are given below, from Page 187 SPHUTA [Sphuta = opening, blossoming]. Calculations relating to the possibility of having an offspring. Three important sphutas are considered in this regard: (i) Beeja (seed) sphuta, (ii) Kshetra (field) sphuta, and (iii) Putra tithi (opportune date for impregnation) sphuta. Beeja sphuta is obtained by adding the longitude of Sun, Venus and Jupiter in the husband's chart. The sum indicates a sign and its Navamsa. If both of these are in odd signs, virility is present and the chances of an offspring are good. If both are in even signs, virility and the chance of progeny are both absent. If one is odd and the other is even, the progeny may be delayed. Kshetra sphuta is worked out by adding the longitudes of Jupiter, Moon and Mars in the wife's natal chart. If the sign and Navamsa thus obtained are both in even signs, fertility and chances of progeny are assured. In case both are in odd signs, the progeny will be delayed or even denied. If one is odd and the other is even, there may be a delay but the progeny can be expected.
Putra tithe sphuta is decisive in progeny prediction. It is determined as follows: Multiply the longitudes of natal Moon and Sun separately by 5, subtract the result obtained from Sun from that of Moon, and convert the result into degrees, minutes, etc. Divide it by 12. The quotient plus 1 gives the tithe required. If this is less than 15, it is deemed to be in the dark half ,and if the remainder is less than 6, the tithe is in the first half. If it is more than 6, it would be in the second half.Impregnation during this period has greater chance of fertilization.

A Horoscope Vol.1 by Dr. B. V. Raman”

***** Page 221 mentions this as

Though the 5th house maybe strong and all indications for birth or children maybe present, there will be no issues if there is no strength or vitality for Beeja and Kshetra. Beeja is the seed of the male and Kshetra is the bed of the woman. In other words Beeja and Kshetra represent, not exactly the sperm and the ovum, but the element that really makes the male and female fluids fertile.------------ if the Beeja and Kshetra in their horoscopes are not strong, when judged according to astrological rules, they will not bring forth any issues.
When the Beeja (male) is weak and Kshetra (female) is strong, then children may be born late in the life after undertaking the necessary remedial measures. The strength to cause pregnancy is controlled by the Sun – lord of vitality – in general. Venus governs the seminal fluid. These two must have favorable positions in the horoscope particularly in odd signs. Similarly, in the case of a female, Mars governs the nature of blood and the Moon
controls the strength to bear children. These two planets should preferably occupy even signs. In case of a male, add together the longitude of Sun, Venus and Jupiter. Expunge
multiples of 360 degrees. The sign arrived at indicates what is called “Beeja Sphuta” or longitude of seed. Similarly in a female horoscope add together the longitude of Mars, Moon and Jupiter. Expunge multiples of 360 degrees. The sign arrived at represents the
longitude of the bed or “Kshetra Sphuta”

For males, flow of seminal fluid is controlled by Venus and power to help in causing pregnancy is governed by the Sun who is the lord of vitality. These two planets must have good placements preferably in odd signs with benefic associations and aspects for males—for females, it will be worthwhile to mention that Moon gives strength to conceive and bear the children and also regulates and controls the flow and cycle of menstruation; whereas Mars, in case of females, plays very important role and is responsible for quality and superiority of blood. As such for females, the Moon and Mars should preferably find good placement in their horoscopes in even signs with benefic associations and aspects. Jupiter who is a natural significator for issues for both males and females should find good placement in horoscopes. Considering the above facts, Beeja Sphuta for males is worked out from the longitudes of Sun, Venus and Jupiter; and, in case of females, Kshetra Sphuta is worked out from the longitudes of Moon, Mars and Jupiter.
Following table will be useful and enable the readers to work out Beeja Sphuta and Kshetra Sphuta for forecasting the results regarding issues:
